The Story

On 7 September 1996, Tupac Shakur was shot in a drive-by shooting near the Las Vegas Strip, after a Mike Tyson fight. He died of his wounds six days later. He was one of the most famous rappers in the world, and some fans never accepted his death.

Rumors soon spread that he had faked it. Believers pointed to the music released after his death and to supposed sightings and photos. A 2014 story claiming he had 'come out of hiding' went viral. Snopes traced it to Huzlers, a fake news site that invited users to create their own news pranks.

A Las Vegas jury convicted a man of Shakur's murder in 2026.

For decades the murder went unsolved, which helped keep the theories alive. According to ABC News, Las Vegas police arrested Duane 'Keffe D' Davis in September 2023. Prosecutors relied in part on his own past statements in police interviews, a self-published memoir and on-camera interviews.

ABC News reports that a jury found Davis guilty of first-degree murder in August 2026, and on 13 October 2026 he was sentenced to 40 years to life in prison. Davis pleaded not guilty. His lawyers argued he had lied about his involvement, and he has said he plans to appeal. At the sentencing, members of Shakur's family spoke about their loss. No sighting or photo of a living Shakur has ever been verified.
