The Stanley Kubrick 'Moon Landing Confession' Video
A widely shared video claims to show director Stanley Kubrick confessing that he filmed fake Apollo Moon landings for NASA. Snopes rated the claim false. It found that the video comes from T. Patrick Murray's film Shooting Kubrick and that unedited footage contains hints the man in it is an actor. A spokesman for Kubrick's widow said Kubrick was never interviewed by Murray.

Verdict: Debunked. The weight of the evidence cited below contradicts this claim. How we rate stories
The Story
Since at least 2015, a video has circulated in which a man presented as director Stanley Kubrick tells an interviewer that the Apollo Moon landings were faked and that he filmed them. Websites sharing it said the interview was recorded three days before Kubrick's death in March 1999 and kept secret for 15 years under an 88-page nondisclosure agreement.
The video drew on an older theory: because Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey had convincing scenes in space, he must have been hired to stage the landings.
A spokesman for Kubrick's widow said Kubrick 'has never been interviewed by T.Patrick Murray.'
Snopes rated the claim false. It found that every version came from T. Patrick Murray's film Shooting Kubrick. Murray's own website said the interview took place in May 1999, two months after Kubrick died, though Snopes allowed that could be a typo. Snopes also said the man does not look or sound like Kubrick, and that in a since-deleted unedited clip the interviewer calls him 'Tom' and gives him directions.
A spokesman for Kubrick's widow said Kubrick had never been interviewed by Murray. Snopes noted that Murray had not said whether the interview was a hoax. No evidence has ever tied Kubrick to the Moon landings.
Origins
According to Snopes, the video had been circulating since at least August 2015. Snopes says that all versions 'originated with a new film from T. Patrick Murray titled Shooting Kubrick.'
The Claims
- Kubrick admitted he helped NASA fake the Moon landings.
- Murray interviewed him three days before his death in March 1999.
- Murray had to sign an 88-page nondisclosure agreement keeping it secret for 15 years.
Key Evidence
- The claims rest entirely on the video and on the websites that spread it.
The Evidence Against
- Snopes says Murray 'claimed on the Shooting Kubrick web site that he was granted unprecedented access to interview the director in May 1999,' two months after Kubrick died, while noting the date 'could be a simple typographical error.'
- Snopes says the man 'simply doesn't look or sound like Stanley Kubrick,' and that in a since-deleted unedited clip the interviewer calls his subject 'Tom' and says, 'Tom, I'm giving you directions.'
- Snopes quotes a spokesman for Kubrick's widow: 'The interview is a lie, Stanley Kubrick has never been interviewed by T.Patrick Murray.'
