Fluoride in the Water as Mind Control
Since U.S. community water fluoridation began in the 1940s, some opponents have claimed it is a plot, from a Cold War-era Communist scheme to a Nazi method for keeping prisoners docile. Fact-checkers have found no evidence for the mind-control story. Real scientific debate over fluoride levels and health effects is a separate issue.

Verdict: Debunked. The weight of the evidence cited below contradicts this claim. How we rate stories
The Story
In 1945, Grand Rapids, Michigan, became the site of the first large-scale water fluoridation in history, according to PolitiFact. Other U.S. cities followed, adding small amounts of fluoride to drinking water to prevent tooth decay. Opposition followed too. A historian consulted by PolitiFact recalled a Cold War-era theory that it was the Communists who were fluoridating water.
A newer version moved the plot to Nazi Germany. Social media posts claim that the Nazis put fluoride in concentration camp water to keep prisoners docile, and that it is now used to pacify the public. PolitiFact looked into the claim in 2011, contacting Holocaust historians and critics of fluoridation. It found 'no teeth' to the claim. A U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum spokesman told PolitiFact, 'I can almost guarantee you that is indeed an urban myth.' Full Fact reached the same conclusion in 2020.
A Holocaust museum spokesman called the Nazi-fluoride story 'indeed an urban myth.'
None of that settles every question about fluoride. Scientists and governments still debate the right levels in drinking water, and some studies have looked at possible effects of high exposure. Those debates are about dosage and health, though, not secret mind control.
The idea that fluoride is a tool to make populations obedient has no supporting evidence. It is still widely shared online.
Origins
According to PolitiFact, the first large-scale fluoridation in history took place in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1945. A historian PolitiFact consulted said she had heard a similar Cold War-era theory in which the Communists, not the Nazis, were fluoridating water. A later version claims the Nazis used fluoride to keep prisoners docile.
The Claims
- The Nazis put fluoride in concentration camp water to make prisoners docile.
- Fluoridation is a plot by a government, Communists or a 'New World Order' to pacify the population.
- Officials know fluoride dulls the mind and hide it.
Key Evidence
- Fluoride is added to many public water systems in the U.S. and some other countries.
- There are real scientific and policy debates about the right fluoride level and possible health effects at higher exposures. These are separate from the mind-control claim.
The Evidence Against
- PolitiFact investigated the Nazi claim in 2011 and found 'no teeth' to it. A U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum spokesman told PolitiFact, 'I can almost guarantee you that is indeed an urban myth.'
- Full Fact concluded in June 2020 that 'there is no evidence that the Nazi Party used fluoride on their prisoners.'
- Neither fact-checker found any document showing fluoride was used for mind control.
